Praying for others

This week's article is about praying for others

Job 42:10 says "After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before."

Galatians 6:2 says "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfil the law of Christ."

Galatians 5:14 says "The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: "Love your neighbour as yourself."

Colossians 4:2 says "Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

There is power in praying for other people, but sometimes it feels tricky to know how to regularly communicate the needs of others to God. Try some of these simple ideas and practical tips when praying for others.  

A beginner’s guide to praying for other people

1. 1) Be confident: When we pray for others, we’re praying to a God who longs to hear and respond to our prayers, so we can begin praying with confidence that our prayers are important to God.
2. 2) Be specific: What is it that you want God to do in the situation, or for the person? The Lord’s prayer contains active and specific requests: “Give us… our daily bread” “Forgive us… our debts” “Lead us… not into temptation.”
3. 3) Be expectant: The God who made and created us also made and created the people we are praying for. God loves our friends, family and community more than we do, so be expectant!
4. 4) Be persistent: Sometimes we need to ask and keep asking (Matthew 7:7), especially when those that we know and love are going through something challenging or tough. Keep persevering in prayer for others.

  Let me touch on praying openly for others

      Firstly, it's important to be certain that the person would like you to pray for them openly. 

    Secondly, if you believe in laying hands on others whilst praying, always check that the person you are about to lay hands on is comfortable with it. While it is scriptural to lay hands (Acts 9:10-19, Acts 8:17), some people prefer their personal space or do not wish to be touched when they are being prayed for.

   Thirdly, ask for their prayer requests and pray with them but always encourage them to pray to God by themself after you have prayed with them. Let them know when you have started praying.

Fourthly, as you are praying with them, be sensitive to the Holy Spirit as God might have a message for them.

Finally, as you pray openly for others, please pray out loud as it is reassuring to the person that you are praying for to know exactly what you are praying about.
