Teach Your Children About Their Identity In Christ

This week's post is to encourage Christian parents to teach their children about their identity in Christ. If you have adults children and you were already a Christian when you were raising them, would you like to share how you taught your children about their identity in Christ? 

The focus of my post is to remind Christian parents of young children that they have a tremendous responsibility to teach their children about the Word of God, their identity in Christ and to lift up their children in prayer unto God. 

As parents, we are responsible before God for our children's overall well-being ranging from their spiritual growth, physical well-being, emotional well-being and many more. When it comes to teaching your children about their identity in Christ, your first point of call is the Bible. The Bible has everything that you need to teach your children about their identity in Christ. God has also equipped some authors to publish some books that further extend what the Word of God has taught us about our identity in Christ. You may want to buy books for yourself or for your children about building your children's identity in Christ.

Today, I will share 3 Scriptures that you can teach your children about their identity in Christ.

Scripture 1 - Jeremiah 1:5a

Jeremiah 1:5a says: "Before God formed you (insert your child/ren's names) in the womb, God knew you and set you apart." Regularly remind your children that God has a good plan for their lives and God knew about them even before they were born. Affirm your children with this Scripture. Teach them this Scripture. Also, let them know that Satan will want them to derail from fulfilling God's plan for their lives. So, they must be alert to the plans of the enemy. Likewise, as parents, you also need to be alert, prayerful and strategic in what your child/ren do or where they go.

Scripture 2 - 1 John 5:4

1 John 5:4 says: "Whoever has been born of God has overcome the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith." You need to constantly remind and teach your children that there is nothing that they cannot do as God has given them the wisdom to know what to do at every point in time. Therefore, encourage your children not to feel discouraged or doubt that they are not good enough. In Christ, they will overcome any challenges.

Be a role model in this regard as well. Whenever you feel discouraged or anxious about anything or unclear about anything, consider affirming yourself with 1 John 5:4 and openly hold on to the Word of God in front of your children. Let your children see that you also depend on the Word of God to boost your confidence, and to remind yourself of your identity in Christ. As adults, we all need to remind ourselves of who we are in Christ, how much more our children.

Scripture 3 - Psalm 139:14

The EXB version of Psalm 139:14 says: "I praise [thank] you because you made me in an amazing [awesome] and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well." The KJV Bible version says: "I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." You want to constantly let your child know that God specially made them amazing. You can even be extremely specific by giving various examples of how God made them amazing. 

Let me give you a task; using your child's name, come up with how amazing your child is using the letters of their name. Let me share an example:

JOB

J - Joyful 

O - Outstanding 

B - Brave

Why not create an affirmation using your child's name? You can even stick it on the fridge once you have created it. 

Prayer

As you start this week, may the presence of the Lord be with you. May the Lord put his angels in charge of you, to watch over you wherever you go in Jesus' name, Amen (Psalm 91:11).
